Coral gardens stretch along the shallows, alive with table corals, staghorn, and brain corals, many of them in surprisingly good health compared to other Maldivian reefs. This is a reef that feels vibrant and alive, with colors that pop even on cloudy days.

Where to snorkel around Kihavah ?

For children and beginners, Kihavah’s inner lagoon is a very safe playground. My son stood in waist-deep water with a mask, and he saw an octopus, parrotfish, and countless reef fish glide by. For me, seeing kids have their first fish encounters just steps from the villa never gets old.
For experienced snorkelers, several channels lead beyond the drop-off into deeper water, where bigger pelagic species might appear. Every snorkel is different : one day it’s a turtle gliding past, the next it’s an anemone city filled with clownfish straight out of Finding Nemo.

The beauty of Kihavah is that you can snorkel everywhere. The reef hugs the shore closely on most sides, making access effortless. For confident swimmers, there are several channels leading beyond the reef into deeper water, where currents can bring in larger pelagic species. I recommend starting with the south and southwest sides for calmer water and moving to the channels when you feel ready for more adventure.

Rich Marine Life right at Your Doorstep

If you’re a marine life lover, Kihavah’s reef will spoil you. On any given snorkel, you might see hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, schools of fusiliers, and the occasional Napoleon wrasse. The drop-off is a treasure trove – peer into the blue and you might spot a hunting jackfish or a curious reef shark.

If you stay at Anantara Kihavah between May and November, the resort can take you to Hanifaru Bay for a chance to snorkel with dozens of manta rays in a single day.
The Dive Center will take you to the spot during one of the many excursions organized by the resort. It’s also a chance to observe whale sharks, as they come along to feast on plankton trapped inside.

Diving at the Golden Wall

One of Kihavah’s signature dive sites, the Golden Wall, feels like an underwater Hanging Garden of Babylon. The spot is a dramatic vertical drop-off offering small caves and overhangs at around 30 meters deep.
It is home to a kaleidoscope of marine life, from schools of reef fish to hawksbill turtles. Expect moray eels, lobsters, and even the occasional sting ray.
The Golden Wall is a site that rewards both seasoned divers and curious beginners, with most of its magic visible at shallower depths.
