Geography

Maldives Atolls and Islands Essential Facts

The Maldives have a unique geological formation. The archipelago has approximately 1,200 islands grouped into 26 natural atolls. Maldivians beautifully call their nation The Island Kingdom.

The country covers about 90,000 square kilometres in the Indian Ocean, stretching 820 km (512 mi) from north to south and between 80–120 km (50–75 mi) east to west.

Of the 1,200 islands, around 200 are inhabited by Maldivians, more than 180 host luxury resorts, and nearly 800 islands and sandbanks remain completely deserted.
