Booking a Maldives holiday ? Discover what to ask your travel agent about insurance, emergencies, local assistance and legal protection before you pay.
Anyone can sell you paradise. But who is there when paradise goes wrong ?

I’ve spent most of my life in tourism. And believe me, I’ve seen it all…
I was responsible for the Maldives and other destinations, looking after travelers and managing what happens behind the scenes.
The most beautiful moments, the joy, the celebrations, the dreams coming true.
But also the worst of what can happen to travelers far from home.
Serious accidents, medical emergencies, hospitalisations, evacuations, personal tragedies, major crises, overbookings…
Situations no one could have anticipated, and some I will never forget.
I studied tourism and built my career only around it : in tour operating, destination management and incoming travel agencies, including incentive travel.
And if all those years taught me one thing, it’s this : anyone can sell you a dream holiday. Not everyone knows how to take care of you when that dream turns into a nightmare.
How do you know if a Maldives travel agent is trustworthy ?
Today, with social media, it’s easier than ever to present yourself as a travel advisor. Beautiful Instagram feeds. Spectacular Maldives resorts. Enormous discounts. Irresistible offers. Everything looks perfect.
And when everything goes according to plan, wonderful.
But what happens when it doesn’t ?
Has the term “travel agent” lost its meaning?
Let’s face it. The travel industry has become something of a jungle. Today, almost anyone can create a website, build a following community and start selling holidays. Some are excellent professionals. Others are simply booking intermediaries.
And regulations ? They vary enormously from one country to another. Not all travel agency licences require the same professional qualifications, financial guarantees or consumer protections.
Does a travel agency licence guarantee your money ?
Not necessarily. Being a licensed travel agent doesn’t automatically mean your money is protected, your holiday is guaranteed or someone is legally responsible for every service you’ve booked.
For qualifying package holidays, certain regulatory systems require financial protection against organiser insolvency. Other bookings may have very different protections, or none of the same guarantees.
And an industry identification number, even one issued by an internationally recognised organisation, isn’t necessarily proof of financial security.
So look beyond the title, the licence number and the beautiful promises. Ask what they actually guarantee.
Why a professional travel agency matters when things go wrong
I don’t want to break the mood here, but things do happen. An overbooked resort. A cancelled flight. A serious accident. A medical emergency requiring hospitalisation, evacuation or repatriation.
Who really stands behind your booking ?
This is where the layers of responsibility behind your booking matter.
Paying a resort or a wholesaler directly does not necessarily mean your booking is better protected.
The resort may be contractually responsible, but who is standing between you and the problem, making sure a solution actually happens?
What happens to your money if a travel company fails?
Imagine paying $15,000 for your Maldives holiday. You book directly with a resort or pay through a wholesaler. Before departure, the resort closes, the wholesaler becomes insolvent or your reservation is no longer honoured.
You’ve paid. Your holiday is approaching. But who is responsible for getting your money back?
Here’s what many travellers don’t realise : booking accommodation alone doesn’t necessarily provide the same financial protection as a legally protected package holiday. And paying a resort directly doesn’t automatically protect you against that resort’s insolvency.

Depending on your booking, you may have contractual rights, payment-card protections or insurance. But these are not interchangeable with a statutory insolvency guarantee.
Before paying, ask who holds your money, who is responsible for your reservation and what financial protection actually applies.
This is precidely where a professional travel agency can provide an additional layer of support. Its legal responsibilities depend on the booking contract, but its ability to intervene can make all the difference.
What happens if your Maldives resort is overbooked ?
Imagine arriving in the Maldives to discover that your confirmed villa is unavailable. Who finds you another villa or another island? Who negotiates an equivalent alternative, organises additional transfers and resolves any price difference?
If that resort is overbooked, who finds you another villa or another island ?
Who negotiates an equivalent alternative, organises additional transfers and resolves any price difference ?
Who helps you when flights are cancelled or an emergency happens ?
Who takes responsibility ? Who steps in ? Who defends you and makes things happen?
A professional travel agency has the experience, contacts and operational capacity to act. To relocate clients, reorganise flights, negotiate with suppliers, coordinate with hospitals, insurers and authorities, and handle the mountain of administration and calls that follow.
Last example : during the recent disruptions in the Middle East, my European travel agency partner spent hours finding solutions for affected travellers, coordinating with airlines, resorts and local contacts, relocating, handling everything.
In the Maldives, my clients are welcomed upon arrival by the agency’s local representative. A dedicated team is on the ground, available 24/7, with established relationships and people they can mobilise when needed.
Knowing whom to call matters. Knowing whom to mobilise matters even more.
Why does professional travel assistance matter in an emergency ?
When a crisis strikes, everything changes. People are frightened, overwhelmed, sometimes unable to think clearly or make decisions.
That’s when experience becomes essential.
You need to react quickly, calmely, precisely.
You need to adapt, make decisions, guide and reassure.
Sometimes, you have to take the lead when clients simply cannot.
Like a captain in a storm, you must stay calm, find a way forward and make people feel they are not alone.
What should you ask a Maldives travel agent before you pay ?
Before booking your Maldives holiday, ask these questions :

- Who am I actually booking with ? A licensed travel agency, a tour operator, a hotel or a booking intermediary?
- Who receives my payment ? If I pay the resort or a wholesaler directly, what responsibility does the person arranging my booking retain ?
- What happens if my resort is overbooked ? Who finds an alternative, negotiates with the resort, organises transfers and resolves any additional costs ?
- Who is actually on location in the Maldives ? Is there an experienced representative available 24/7, with the contacts and authority to intervene ?
- What happens if my journey is disrupted ? Who can help reorganise flights, accommodation and transfers when something unexpected happens ?
- Who coordinates a medical emergency ? Who works with hospitals, insurers, local authorities and consulates if I need evacuation or repatriation ?
- Do I have appropriate travel insurance ? Does it cover medical care, evacuation, repatriation and unexpected trip interruption ?
- What legal and financial protections apply ? Who is my contractual partner, what happens if a supplier becomes insolvent, and which country’s laws govern my booking ?
- Who receives my payment, and what happens if they fail ? If I pay the resort or a wholesaler directly, is my reservation financially protected ?
And who is responsible if the supplier becomes insolvent or fails to honour my booking ?
And don’t just take someone’s word for it. Ask for written confirmation. A promise is reassuring but a clearly defined responsibility is far more valuable !
So, ask these questions before you pay. Not when you need help.

The true value of a travel professional isn’t always in the price
A beautiful website, thousands of followers and spectacular discounts can be convincing. But before trusting someone with your dream holiday, look beyond the photographs.
Who stands behind your booking ? What’s their background ? Who is there when you need help ? Who has the experience, the contacts and the responsibility to act?
Not everything that glitters is gold. Even in paradise.
And remember, appropriate personal travel insurance is essential !
My European travel agency partner also offers travel insurance options, so you can consider additional protection for medical emergencies, evacuation, repatriation and unexpected disruptions, depending on the policy selected.
Here’s another tip : check your credit card benefits before booking.
Some credit cards include travel insurance when you pay for your trip with them. Depending on your card, this may include cancellation, medical assistance, evacuation or repatriation.
But don’t assume you’re automatically covered.
Check with your bank or card issuer before paying, including the coverage limits, exclusions and payment conditions. Even premium cards don’t necessarily cover everything.
A little checking before departure can make a big difference when you need help.
Even the best travel agency cannot replace an insurer or guarantee coverage for every emergency.
Not everything that glitters is gold. Even in paradise.
