Maldives Waves cannot be considered as high and powerful as in Hawaii or Teahupo’o in Tahiti, the swell reaches normally heights, but it offers great chances of barrels and long fun waves.

The Maldives are the perfect destination to learn surfing as well as for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Maldives surfing Seasons

Maldives surfing Seasons depend on the atolls, but most of the archipelago is good for surfing from April to October.

March and November are also good and have the best time.

Waves are constant mainly during early summer months (  for northern Hemisphere ), when swells from the South are abundant.

Where to Surf in Maldives

Where to Surf in Maldives ?

All of the archipelago can be divided into three different surf areas :
North & South Male Atolls, Central Atolls and South Atolls .

What is the difference between the main Atolls ( Region wise ) ?

The main differences between them are about the size of the swell, the consistency and especially the crowd. Then, the distances.

Less crowded atolls ( northern and Southern ) are paradise if you want to ride alone but that comes at 2 costs : travel time + price of transfer.

The most famous and well served too is the region of Male, in North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll in Central Atoll region.

Both atolls are easily accessible and offer great swell but they are often crowded by tourists and locals.

maldives best wave breaks

Where are the best Breaks ?

The best breaks are on the external reefs on the Southeast side of the atolls. Generally, in Maldives most of the spots are very close to each other, so it’s easy to find a good surf. There are some good waves everywhere along the archipelago, but some spots are not always easly reachable excepted from Resorts, Guest Houses or Surf Camps. Note that Surf charter boats are the best way to surf around atolls due to the easy access to most of the waves and avoid crowds in the water.

Surfing Seasons and Best Spots

Surfing in the Maldives is tempered by Northeast and Southwest monsoons. During the monsoon from the northeast (from March to April), the conditions are optimal in the Southern atolls. From May to October, during the southwest monsoon, the best surfing area is located in the Northern and central atolls. Some of the spots are unnamed, especially in these atolls. Note that North Male Atoll is the most crowded due to its vicinity with the aiport and Male city.

When is the best time to Surf in Maldives ?

The best time to go surfing in the Maldives is during winter, which lasts from March to October in this part of the world.

During this period, storms bring the largest swells in the archipelago.

The biggest waves are likely to occur in June, July and August. Reef can be dangerous as it is usually on islands as such but you will rarely touch it unless you surf on a very low tide.
