Maldives The Island Kingdom

The Maldives belong to the small and exclusive list of the Ultimate Place to see. Paradisiacal and unique in the World, they are an invitation to Dream and their breathtaking landscapes make this dream a reality.

Located astride the equator, south of India and west of Sri Lanka, their fascinating beauty resides in an unique geography exclusively made of natural atolls, sandy islands and reefs, scattered like gems and stretching along 823 km (511 miles). Their average ground level is just 1.5 meter above the sea level. All land above the surface in the Maldives is of coralline origin. The beauty of their pristine lagoons and sandy beaches along with their splendid aerial views make the Maldives an Absolute Paradise.

They have inspired and seduced generations of travellers. Their name comes from Indian traders who called them "Maladiv", literally meaning The Island Garland in Sanskrit. Today's travellers give them the title of "Pearls of Indian Ocean". Maldivian, their inhabitants call them "The Island Kingdom". The origin of the word "atoll" itself derives from the Dhivehi language of the Maldives "Atholhu" and is now used in many languages worldwide.

Secret destination of a few well informed divers and travellers in the early 70s, the country hosted its first International Resort in 1972. A few resisted to their beauty but many spread the word. Along the following years, several desert islands were chosen to be transformed into Resorts in order to welcome the increasing number of visitors. Until the early 90s, Maldives were mostly the home of simple 3 stars to comfortable 4 stars Properties. In 2009, they have one of the largest concentration of Luxury Resorts with some of the most prestigious, elegant and trendy names.
