Six Senses Laamu review by Dreaming of Maldives.
Explore everything you need to know about one of the Maldives’ most remote and sustainably designed resorts : the extraordinary Six Senses Laamu.
Hidden in the far-far away Laamu Atoll, the dreamy resort indulged us in “No Shoes, No News” serenity with a playful, upscale twist. Every element of the resort, from its sustainable design to its soulful cuisine, invites you to slow down and savor the moment.
The video and most of the photos were created by Sakis during our two stays at the resort. Since our stays, the resort has added some villas and updated some photos. These photos are stated as such.
At Dreaming of Maldives, every review is based on real, in-depth stays and personal experiences.
During my stays, I explored every detail of the island : its extraordinary villas, snorkeling, the sandbank, organic dining experiences, spa rituals, snorkeling…
I also interviewed the dive center manager to better understand the surrounding marine life and coral health. This in-depth Six Senses Laamu review brings together my full impressions, and the photography and video were created by Sakis, as always. Every detail has been experienced and curated here with care.
Six Senses Laamu is secluded in undisturbed nature and surrounded by a gorgeous blue lagoon and a rich house reef just a short swim away. The eco-friendly luxury island is the only operational resort in Laamu Atoll — a far south, untouched atoll of the Maldives.
Six Senses Laamu truly has it all — a powdery beach, a dreamy sandbank, wild jungle paths, a vast blue lagoon, and vibrant snorkeling. The perfect Maldivian combo.
A unique resort in a unique atoll, Six Senses Laamu remains, to this day, one of the most beautiful hotels we have seen in the Maldives..

Everything here is rooted in sustainability — from villas to dining. True barefoot luxury done with intention, ethics, and deep respect for the environment.
For me, the further, the better. Six Senses Laamu feels like an escape from the world. Far from the usual routes, the island’s isolation offers rare peace, space, and true Maldivian wilderness.
Swim straight from shore and snorkel for hours until Six Senses Laamu’s sandbank.
From garden-to-table menus to Zero-Carbon fine dining overwater, every meal is crafted with care and global inspiration in stunning surroundings.
From kids’ activities to family villas, Six Senses Laamu welcomes little explorers with great activities, without compromising its peaceful atmosphere.
Jungle paths, wild coconut trees, and natural vegetation give the island a raw and untouched feeling — immersive and beautifully unpolished.
Six Senses Laamu at a Glance
Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in the remote Laamu Atoll, a far-flung, virgin corner of the Maldives where nature reigns supreme. Few resorts offer such a perfect Maldivian combination than Six Senses Laamu : soft sandy beaches, a secluded sandbank, lush wilderness, a turquoise lagoon, untouched diving areas, and excellent snorkeling just steps aways.
The island is unlike any other resort in the Maldives. Deep in the south, far from the usual circuits, the island offers a rare blend of simplicity, elegance, and purpose-driven design.
For me — because each traveler sees the Maldives differently — it stands among the most beautiful and meaningful resort experiences in the country.

Six Senses Laamu Maldives is one of the most remote and inspiring resorts in the Maldives. Set in the untouched Laamu Atoll, it blends intelligent sustainability with true barefoot luxury : a rare balance of refinement and raw nature.
The eco-friendly luxury resort is reachable after a 65 minute flight by seaplane from Male International airport, or after a 45 minute flight with Maldivian Airways to the Atoll’s domestic airport of Kadhdhoo, followed by 20 minutes speed boat ride.
Secluded in a undisturbed nature and surrounded by a stunning lagoon on one side and a long close-by and rich house reef on the other side, the spectacular resort offers spacious beach villas close to fine white sandy beaches and some of the most beautiful water villas we’ve seen in the Maldives.
Six Senses Laamu is a wild island where nature’s beauty remains raw, pure, and profoundly peaceful.
Six Senses Laamu’s villas and retreats—overwater and beach—are crafted from renewable, natural materials and designed for seamless harmony with the island. Spacious, light-filled, and intensely private, each villa offers breathtaking lagoon or beach views and all the comforts you expect from eco-luxury.

Six Senses Laamu also features the largest overwater facility in the Maldives entirely dedicated to entertainment and culinary pleasures. The resort offers five restaurants and bars with endless views over the blue lagoon and surrounding reefs — including a chocolate room, an ice cream studio, a wine and cheese cellar, a chic lounge bar, a rooftop Asian fusion restaurant, a zero-carbon dining concept, and a superb beachfront main restaurant.
For spa lovers and those seeking holistic treatments, Six Senses Laamu is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite choices in the Maldives.
Awarded for Best Spa Design of the Year, its open-air treatment rooms — or “nests” — are tucked into lush vegetation with sweeping views of the blue lagoon.
Managed by the world-renowned Six Senses Spa brand, the sanctuary offers a dreamy menu of treatments, from self-pampering rituals to full holistic wellness journeys, including Ayurvedic retreats.
Secluded in undisturbed nature and surrounded by a stunning lagoon on one side and a long house reef on the other, Six Senses Laamu is a paradise for snorkeling, water sports, and even surfing.
The resort’s house reef and diving spots are accessible directly from the main jetty or the overwater bar, or by boat if you wish to explore further snorkeling spots.

Six Senses Laamu is also a paradise for our little Robinsons, thanks to The Den — the resort’s kids club, set right on the beach.
Children can enjoy a world of discovery with creative arts and crafts, outdoor cinema, snorkeling, treasure hunts, kids’ diving sessions, and so much more.

The medium-sized, lush island also features a fabulous and unique sandbank just nearby — easily reachable while snorkeling through the shallow lagoon.

This is also why I love remoteness in the Maldives: diving.
Laamu Atoll is simply a diver’s dream, with uncrowded sites, untouched coral formations, and thrilling channel dives with sharks, rays, napoleon wrasse, mantas — and even whale sharks.
Bonus : Six Senses’ dive center offers exclusive access to some of the Maldives’ wildest and most unspoiled dive spots.

Six Senses Laamu is unforgettable. The resort is so unique, so soulful… the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Here are some of our favorite moments from this extraordinary island.

Breakfast in-villa with a dreamy view
We loved this moment so much. Epicurian breakfast and that iconic view, all enjoyed from a glass-bottom table on the deck of our villa. The Dream.

Zero-Carbon Dining Overwater
If you stay at Six Senses Laamu, you must try the zero-carbon dinner at Deck-A-Dence, served overwater, at glass bottomed floor tables.
Ingredients are sourced entirely within Laamu Atoll and served raw, requiring no energy for cooking. The result? Extraordinary.

Snorkeling along Six Senses Laamu house reef
Snorkeling at Six Senses Laamu is superb : dense coral gardens, big species like sharks and turtles, and easy access from the jetty or Chill Bar ladder. Often, you’re the only one in the water.

The resort’s sandbank
Dreaming of a sandbank? Just snorkel a little further east from the resort and you’ll reach Six Senses Laamu’s dreamy, pristine sandbank, surrounded by turquoise shallows and …complete silence.

Six Senses Laamu In details.
everything you need to know
This review brings together everything that defines Six Senses Laamu : its environmental consciousness, exceptional service, soul-stirring design, and deep connection to nature. From sunrise yoga and zero-carbon dining to reef conservation and surfing at Yin Yang, discover in detail everything that makes Six Senses Laamu one of the . We’ve stayed twice at the resort, Six Senses Laamu indulged us in “No Shoes, No News” serenity with a playful, upscale twist. Every element of the resort, from its sustainable design to its soulful cuisine, invites you to slow down and savor the moment.
Accommodation : Six Senses Laamu offers both beachfront and overwater villas, each a private eco-luxury haven crafted in total harmony with the environment.
Six Senses Laamu’s villas are designed to blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Whether nestled in the jungle or perched above the lagoon, each one feels like a peaceful cocoon, open to the elements and full of light.

Staying in these villas feels like living in a stylish treehouse by the sea. All villas are built with sustainable materials like weathered wood and palm thatch, and designed to invite the outside in. High ceilings, open-air bathrooms, and panoramic windows keep you constantly connected to the stunning surroundings. The décor is delightfully rustic yet chic – light teak timbers, soft cotton fabrics, rope and thatch accents, and pops of bright color that mirror the lagoon. Whether you choose a villa tucked in the jungle or one perched over the lagoon, your views will be equally spectacular – a bright turquoise lagoon and endless sky at every turn.
If you want space, raw nature, and simplicity wrapped in comfort, Six Senses Laamu’s villas are it.
We loved how private and spacious the villas are — each with its own slice of beach or sea. Many feature upper decks or netted hammocks for lounging, and all come with bicycles to explore the island freely. Some villas include private pools, and the dedicated Family Villas are perfect for those traveling with children.
Since our last visit, Six Senses Laamu has added new villa categories and two retreats. In this updated review, you’ll find more insights and villa locations across the island.

Despite the variety of villa types, all share some wonderful common features. Every villa (even the smallest) comes with bicycles, so you can explore the island along sandy paths.
Outdoor bathrooms are amazing. They’re completely open with soft colors, nothing comes to break this feeling of being on a castaway, excepted for the amenities of course. Showering under the sun or stars is such a treat. We also appreciated the thoughtful touches : a pillow menu, organic cotton bathrobes, locally made toiletries, and for myself, the yoga mats in the room.
The service is top-notch too. Our GEM (Guest Experience Maker), essentially a personal butler, checked in often to ensure we had everything we needed. This attentive yet unobtrusive hospitality made our stay feel very special.
Six Senses Laamu – A Dreamy Child Friendly Resort
Six Senses Laamu’s kids club, called The Den, is one of our favorites, not only for its idyllic beachside location, but for how beautifully it nurtures creativity and connection with nature.
Simple, close to the earth, and thoughtfully run, The Den encourages children to craft objects using materials from the island or recycled elements. I still treasure a necklace gifted to me, made of compressed paper, so stylish and clever.
A dedicated team cares for children aged 3 to 12, offering a rich variety of hands-on activities at the ArtZone, along with snorkeling adventures, island discovery walks, and bike tours.
Read my Review of Six Senses Laamu Kids Club.
Six Senses Laamu delighted us with an array of dining experiences that were as inspiring as they were delicious, cooked with fresh ingredients and with sustainability in mind. Each of them is set in a beautiful location : overwater, with sunset views, elevated on a platform in the middle of an organic garden….
We savored tropical fruits and veggies grown right on the island, which is pretty reare in the Maldives, the islands don’t have much agriculture. Almost everything is imported. The resort even has a mushroom hut and a chili garden by the Leaf restaurant ! This garden-to-table approach shines through in the flavor.
Service is island-relaxed yet flawless. And if you’re craving private dining, Six Senses Laamu excels at that too : in-villa breakfasts, picnic lunches on the sandbank, or a dinner on the beach under the stars can all be arranged.
A feast for the senses
Longitude – Six Senses Laamu main restaurant

Longitude is the resort’s airy two-story open-air restaurant, and it’s where we ate our meals every day. Morning’s breakfasts at Longitude are a joy, with generous buffet, a feast of fresh tropical fruits from the garden, smoothies and juices made to order, fluffy pastries worthy of a french bakery, and live cooking stations.
There’s an over-water net section where you can sip your coffee while lounging above the lagoon.
Each evening, the chefs spotlight a different world cuisine or concept, Mediterranean buffet with grills and antipasti, Asian street food market, Indian Ocean barbecue, Despite being the “main” restaurant, Longitude never felt boring, the menus changed daily and the quality was consistently high.
Zen – Japanese Fusion

Zen is a small and intimate Japanese fusion restaurant tucked upstairs, above the main bar area. It was fully booked during our stay until we snagged a last-minute cancellation, and we’re so glad we did. With just a handful of tables and an open kitchen, Zen delivers a really interactive dining experience. The restaurant’s ambiance is romantic and tranquil, kids are welcome but as you can imagine, it’s not the best place for the very young ones.
Leaf – Organic Garden Restaurant

Leaf is an alfresco restaurant set high on a wooden platform that literally overlooks the resort’s organic garden on one side and the sea on the other. The concept here is to showcase island-grown produce and local Maldivian flavors. The menu is seasonal and changes often. We opted for the chef’s tasting menu, which was a journey through Maldivian-inspired dishes : tangy fish cured in local citrus, salads bursting with garden greens and edible flowers, grilled reef fish with herbs from just meters away, and even desserts incorporating the island’s own coconut and lemongrass. Leaf’s setting and sustainable ethos encapsulate what Six Senses Laamu is all about.
Zero-Carbon Deck – the famous Zero Carbon Dinner.

On special nights, Six Senses Laamu sets up an intimate dining event dedicated to zero-carbon fine cuisine.
It’s a challenging promise : to create a gourmet dinner with zero carbon emissions.
What does that mean ? Chefs must craft something delicious using only locally sourced ingredients from Laamu Atoll — no cooking fuel, no electricity. Everything is served raw, fresh, and imaginative.
This remarkable dining experience takes place overwater, at glass-bottom tables set at the very end of the main restaurant’s jetty. It’s incredibly exclusive — just six tables in total — so booking in advance is highly recommended.
Chill Bar – a Dream to Chill and sip a drink

Chill Bar is Six Senses Laamu’s main social hub. Built right over the house reef drop-off, it features several multi-level decks with comfy seating and funky bright cushions.
By day, the vibe is relaxed — laid-back tunes play in the background, and the staff are always happy to chat about island life. It’s also a starting point for snorkelers and divers, with a ladder that’s become a casual “reef entrance” for many guests. The bar team even keeps an eye on fins and towels while you’re out exploring.
If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a DJ session at sunset — the resort sometimes invites some amazing names. They even hosted one of our favorites : Sven Van Hees !
The Ice & Chocolate Studio

Sweet tooths, rejoice ! Six Senses Laamu has a charming open-air ice cream parlor that became a daily pilgrimage for us. Tucked along the overwater dining facility, the Ice & Chocolate Studio serves complimentary homemade ice creams and sorbets in 48 flavors, as well as handcrafted chocolates. It’s self-serve – you just wander in and a friendly attendant offers you cups or cones of whatever flavor catches your eye. There’s a shaded patio with tables to sit and lick your ice cream while looking at the ocean.
Altitude – The Wine Tower

Altitude is one of the coolest wine cellars you’ll encounter : a futuristic-looking tower made of glass that rises 6.4 meters above the sea.
Inside, it’s blissfully cool and stocked with over 300 wine labels from around the world. There is a Wine & Cheese Discovery with a sommelier, and a five-course dinner paired with four exceptional wines.
The glass walls give 360° views of the island and ocean, and below your feet through the glass floor, you can see fish swishing around the tower’s base! Altitude also offers regular wine tastings and can be booked for private dinners. It’s a must for wine enthusiasts or anyone wanting a unique dining venue .
Six Senses Laamu’s spa and wellness offering is a true standout, one of the major assets of the resort. If you’re seeking deeper transformation, Six Senses Laamu offers personalized wellness programs that combine diagnostics, treatments, movement, and mindful rituals.
It’s truly one of the best resorts in the Maldives for a yoga or holistic retreat. Each program is tailored to your personal wellness goals — whether it’s to restore sleep, detox, energize, or simply reconnect with yourself.
The design is stunning: wooden nests nestled in the jungle and built on stilts above the bright blue lagoon. The architecture is so beautiful and creative that it has even been awarded Best Spa Design, and it truly deserves it

The spa menu goes far beyond classic massages. You’ll find Ayurvedic rituals, deep tissue healing, sound therapy, and guided meditation.
Daily yoga sessions, including aerial and Power yoga, take place in an open-air pavilion facing the lagoon.
Six Senses also regularly invites visiting practitioners from around the world, offering everything from breathwork to energy healing.

At Six Senses Laamu, you can be as active or as chilled as you wish. There’s a wonderful selection of activities that showcase the island’s natural playground and the resort’s playful spirit.
Here are some highlights :
Water Activities
The lagoon at Six Senses Laamu is a playground for water lovers. The island’s surrounding make this possible : a wide blue lagoon, a near-by and long house reef, and a surf break : Yin Yang.
Snorkeling, surfing, diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, catamaran sailing, Laamu’s waters offer freedom in every direction and for all levels.
The resort also offers catamaran trips, guided turtle safaris, and sandbank escapes by SUP.

Land Activities
There’s so much to do on land at Six Senses Laamu, yet the island always feels peaceful.
We loved biking along sandy jungle paths, exploring hidden corners and palm-lined stretches. Yoga sessions are held daily in the open-air pavilion, while the jungle cinema offers cozy film nights under the stars. You can join cooking classes with the chef, tour the organic garden, visit the Earth Lab for sustainability insights, or simply wander to the sandbank for quiet reflection.
Whether you want movement or stillness, creative workshops or nature immersion — the island gives you the space to choose your own rhythm.

Excursions & Island Adventures – Beyond Six Senses laamu’s Shores
Six Senses Laamu offers curated island adventures and excursions that immerse you in Laamu’s wild beauty and Maldivian local life. You will have plenty of options :
- Sunset & Dolphin Cruises aboard a traditional dhoni, where playful spinner dolphins escort you at golden hour (canapés and Prosecco included)
- Private Sandbank Picnics, spending a day alone on your own desert island — perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing, and candlelit barbecue dinners offshore.
- Island-Hopping & Local Village Visits, where you explore nearby inhabited islands, traditional life, schools, and old mosques — a window into authentic Maldivian culture.
- Turtle Safari Snorkels, drifting through Laamu’s waters in search of gentle green and hawksbill turtles
- Fishing Excursions, including early-morning reef fishing and night-time root fishing, a traditional experience with the local crew.
- Sustainability Tours, giving guests a behind‑the‑scenes look at the Earth Lab, MUI Marine Science programs, coral reef restoration, and zero‑waste initiatives

During our stay, I had the chance to interview Petra, the resort’s dive center manager, and I can confirm: Laamu Atoll is one of the Maldives’ best-kept secrets when it comes to diving and snorkeling.
Snorkeling starts just steps away : you can access the vibrant house reef directly from the main jetty or even the ladder at Chill Bar. It’s incredibly easy, and the marine life is rich : hard corals, reef sharks, turtles, rays, schools of fish. One morning, we even spotted an eagle ray cruising below our villa deck.

But it’s under the surface, and away from the island, that Laamu reveals its wildest side. The diving here is remote and unspoiled. Most dive spots are empty — no other boats, no crowds, just you and the reef. Channel dives bring encounters with reef sharks, stingrays, napoleon wrasse, and mantas. And if you’re lucky, even whale sharks.
The dive center is PADI-certified and led by a passionate, eco-conscious team. They offer courses, night dives, discovery sessions, and unique trips to pristine outer reefs. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, this is the Maldives at its purest. Quiet, alive, and unforgettable.
Six senses Laamu’s house reef wraps around a good stretch of the island’s southeast side, until the sandbank.

Snorkeling at Six Senses Laamu
On our second day, we grabbed snorkel gear (complimentary from the dive center) and headed to the house reef. The best entry point is by the Chill Bar, where a wooden staircase leads right into the lagoon. From there, you swim just a few minutes toward the reef edge. We were advised that initially the coral in front of the bar shows some wear (a bit of past damage, likely from warming events), but just after 5–10 minutes of snorkeling, the reef becomes more and more beautiful with very pretty coral formations.
Snorkeling is a daily routine at Six Senses Laamu, each time we went out, we saw something new. One morning, a green sea turtle appeared, on another snorkel, we found a patch of reef where dozens of clownfish bobbed in anemones (a scene straight from Finding Nemo).
If you are new to snorkeling or prefer guidance, the resort offers guided snorkel tours on the house reef too.
And if you’re feeling adventurous, try the night snorkel, once a week they organize a night outing where you can witness the reef’s nocturnal life.
where to snorkel around Six Senses Laamu ?
Around Six Senses Laamu, you’ll find multiple excellent snorkeling entry points, both for independent swims and guided tours.
Note that the best snorkeling is not near the villas but near the overwater bar area.
The house reef starts there and extends all the way to a sandbank in the far distance.
Here’s a quick breakdown based on our experience and Petra’s insights :
- Chill Bar : your easiest and most popular entry. Just grab your fins and mask, step down the ladder.
The begining has damaged corals, but swim further towards East, along the house reef, and you will see beautiful corals and even more fish, particularly from the mid-end of Jetty A all along towards the sandbank. - Main Jetty (Arrival Jetty) : another direct access to the house reef. Swim out and you’ll quickly reach drop-offs with colorful reef life. Best during slack tide for calmer waters.
- Spa Side & Water Villas Perimeter : some overwater villas (especially ocean-facing ones – jetty A and C) offer direct access to the reef. Guests often report seeing turtles, baby sharks, and eagle rays right from their decks.
- Sandbank Reef Snorkeling : calm, shallow, and picturesque. The longest adventure from the resort. For advanced.

Pay attention : Before exploring the lagoon, I highly recommend stopping by the Dive Center, they’ll give you tips, safety advice, and help you understand the reef before you go.
And don’t skip the guided snorkeling tour ! You’d miss so much marine life and hidden reef corners without it.
Diving options from Six Senses Laamu
Laamu Atoll is a return to what diving in the Maldives used to feel like.
Diving at Six Senses Laamu is for divers seeking uncrowded sites and rich encounters with marine life.
Laamu Atoll remains one of the Maldives’ least explored regions, and it shows : a rich variety of coral formations, abundant fish life, and, last but not least : dive boats often completely alone at sea.
From thrilling channel dives teeming with reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleons, stingrays, turtles, and jackfish, to seasonal manta encounters and quiet coral pinnacles, Laamu offers a complete journey back to what diving in the Maldives is truly known for.
The fully equipped PADI dive center is just steps from Chill Bar and offers a wide range of courses and excursions for all levels. Safety is excellent, and the team keeps groups small and personal. Whether it’s your first dive or your 100th, you’ll find the experience wild, quiet, and deeply rewarding.

To dive deeper into Laamu’s underwater world, don’t miss my full interview with Petra, the resort’s dive center manager, she shares local tips, favorite spots, and what makes diving here so special.

Filmed and produced entirely by us during our stay, this is your chance to see what we saw and loved and feel what makes Laamu so special.
In the Maldives, the further, the better (in my opinion). Some like it, some don’t, and for those who don’t, there are other beautiful resorts closer to Male.
But for those truly seeking the ultimate Robinson experience, Six Senses Laamu is it. And believe me, I scouted the entire archipelago, and it doesn’t feel the same.
What I love at Six Senses Laamu is this sense of isolation, of being completely disconnected from the noise. It’s a return to nature and the essentials, wrapped in understated luxury, barefoot comfort, and surrounded by genuinely warm people. Everything flows, everything feels just right.
No bling, no fuss, just wild beauty, soulful design, and pure island rhythm.
